The Government of KwaZulu-Natal will honour the late Minority Party leader Mr Amichand Rajbansi with a provincial official funeral after President Jacob Zuma acceded to a request by the Premier, Dr Zweli Mkhize.
Mr Rajbansi, passed away on Thursday and his funeral takes place in Chatsworth, in Durban, tomorrow.
As a sign of respect, the President has directed that the national flag will fly at half-mast at every flag station in the Province a day before the burial or cremation until the evening of the day of the funeral or cremation. This includes the burial site and cremation facility.
In his motivation for the burial to be elevated to this status Dr Mkhize said:
"Mr Rajbansi led his party to participate during the negotiations that paved the way for the transition to democracy. He also played a significant role in stabilizing the politics of the Province, especially in the period between 1994 and 1999. He is remembered for his debating skills and cracking of jokes in a tension-filled debate.
"He ably led his party through all the democratic elections that saw his party increasing its seats in the Provincial Legislature and maintaining a presence in the National Parliament.
"He was appointed to the Provincial Executive in Council, where he served as an MEC for Sports and Recreation during the period 2004-2009. He distinguished himself both as an MEC and a seasoned politician. He served his constituency with diligence and commendation."
Provincial official funerals for Members of the Executive Council are provided for in the Ministerial Handbook.
Although Mr Rajbansi was no longer an MEC, the Provincial Government requested the President to recognize his contribution and honour him in this manner.
Responding to the positive response from President Zuma, Dr Mkhize said although Mr Rajbansi was a political opponent, his contribution to the improvement of the lives of the poor was immense and had to be recognized.
